Pair of 18th-Century Carved Wood Friezes, Lacquered in Blue and Fine Gold, likely part of a liturgical decorative ensemble. Made of lime wood, this pair of antique decorative friezes, in Renaissance style but carved in the 18th century, was once framed by frames, now missing, which explains the irregular, unfinished edge. The decorative candelabra motif in relief is achieved through alternating love knots, fruit, and grapes, carved and gilded, standing out against the blue tempera background. The carved and gilded grapes at the end are a symbol of abundance and wealth, as is the pomegranate, a fruit always considered auspicious and propitious.
The two rectangular panels are approximately 170 cm tall and are in good condition, despite some minor gilding losses. They feature a hook at the top for hanging vertically, for example, on the sides of a door, like period architectural elements.
Northern Italy, 1700.
