Osaka Temple/Joel Sokolov (2002) - Signed by the Artist
Acrylic on Wood
Purchased in 2004 directly from the artist
Dimensions: 4 foot by 6ft./ approx 1.5” deep
I originally discovered Joel through my designer, who recommended I look at his work. I loved this painting...it is ethereal and evokes a calming vibe. Because it is a large work, it was perfect to give depth to my room, which has very high ceilings. It makes a strong statement in the space and has always been a source of joy. I moved to a new house, and I cannot accommodate this large work, so I am reluctantly going to part with it.
In 2005 Sokolov moved from downtown Manhattan to several acres of a remote lava flow in Puna, Hawaii. He built a home and studio and focused on privately creating his artwork, an artists oasis and botanical garden. He exhibited his ‘Big Island Drawings’ at the Kentler International Drawing Space in Brooklyn, and at the Honolulu Museum of Art. His work from Hawaii reflects his natural and internal environment during this period which evolved from representational into a more intuitive abstract expression.
Born and raised in New York City, Sokolov identified as an artist at an early age. He is a graduate of Laguardia H.S. of Music and Art, N.Y.C., 1973 and is a graduate of the Boston Museum School of Fine Arts, 1977.
In 1980 Sokolov renovated a loft in Tribeca which became his home, studio, and gallery until 2005. He exhibited at White Columns, The Drawing Center, Franklin Furnace, B.A.M., as well as many other galleries and venues. In New York City, Sokolov focused on cityscape painting, aerial views, aviation, landscape, and views of the World Trade Center, which was the view from his studio window.
Sokolov’s artwork was collected by Henry Geldzahler, who was a mentor and patron, as well as by Werner Kramarsky and Mike Nichols, among many others.
Sokolov has been Artist in Residence at the Lucid Art Foundation and at the Dorland Mountain Arts Colony, where he designed two new studios and secured funding for them to be built. His work with fashion and decorative arts using textiles printed with his artwork have been collected and exhibited. In the 1990’s he was author/editor of ‘Textile Design’, and ‘Product Design 4’ distributed by Rizzoli. He received grants from the Innovative Design Fund for his work with painted custom furniture, as well as from Robert Rauschenberg’s Change, Inc., NYFA, Artists Space, the Adolph and Esther Gottlieb Foundation, and two nominations for the Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation grant. He has completed commissions for several public spaces in Boston and New York City. Sokolov’s artworks are included in numerous corporate, private, and museum collections worldwide.
