Antique Portrait Painting of Sir Walter Scott (dated 1905, after 1790s original)
This is a beautifully executed antique oil portrait of the famed Scottish author and poet Sir Walter Scott, painted in 1905 but depicting him as a handsome young man in the 1790s, early in his literary career. The artist has rendered Scott with remarkable skill and sensitivity, capturing him with blonde hair, a thoughtful expression, and a refined appearance. He wears a russet-coloured jacket, crisp white shirt, and a classic black bowtie, evoking the elegance of late 18th-century fashion.
The painting is signed and dated on the reverse and retains the original framer’s label from Birmingham, England, offering a tangible connection to its Edwardian origins. It is housed in its original antique gilt frame, which shows expected wear and aging, including some old, well-blended repairs. The frame still complements the portrait beautifully, and the entire piece presents very well and is ready to hang.
About Sir Walter Scott (1771–1832):
Sir Walter Scott was one of the most influential literary figures of the 19th century, best known for pioneering the historical novel. Born in Edinburgh, Scotland, he rose to fame with works such as Waverley, Rob Roy, Ivanhoe, and The Lady of the Lake. Scott’s writings helped shape the romantic image of Scotland and left a profound mark on European literature. In addition to his literary career, he was also a lawyer, judge, and antiquarian. His legacy endures not only through his novels and poetry but also in the cultural identity of Scotland itself.
This portrait is a fine collector’s piece — combining artistic merit, literary history, and period charm — ideal for admirers of Scottish heritage or antique portraiture.
Overall, it measures approximately 32cm x 26.5cm including the frame.
