This antique Trumeau mirror features rococo inspired gilt floral and ribbon scrollwork encircling a pastoral scene, oil on wood, of two romantic figures in repose. The scene features verdant greens, rich blues and reds, and warm cream and taupe hues. The bucolic scene is crowned by an intricately carved gilt bouquet of leaves and flowers, bookended by bushels of gilt wheat. Along each side of the motif, engraved gilt bouquets of flowers cascade as though suspended in midair, with lushly detailed gilt ribbon atop each one.
The outer gilt frame of the piece, as well as the inner gilt scrollwork surrounding the mirror itself, exhibit more linear, geometric inspiration so characteristic of Louis XIV antiques. This example beautifully shows what elaborate detailing is still possible within these parameters. The intricate engraving of the mirror's inner gilt frame achieves almost beadlike and filigree effects, truly showcasing the gilt work from every angle of illumination. Gilt floral pseudo-tiles adorn each corner of the inner scrollwork frame.
The entire piece measures approximately 36" across by 48.5" tall, with an approximate depth of 1.5". The mirror aspect of the piece measures approximately 30" across by 26.5" tall. The mirror shows some signs of age and use, which are documented in the photographs. Areas of slight chipping on the piece are also noted in the photographs provided, which should be used to determine condition. The hues of the frame vary; from a base of sea-foam green with layers of spring and mossy greens, and hints of yellow ochre throughout, due to age and subsequent craquelure. The back of the piece shows signs of age, with wood backing secured with nails for the mirror and the painted scene. The wood securing the mirror shows some degree of repair was done to the mirror backing in the past. A wire is attached in the back for ease of hanging.
This piece has no discernible maker's mark. It was sourced from an estate in a private community on the south shore of Long Island, New York. Estimated date of production 1830 - 1900. For similar pieces from this estate, including two Sevres style urn lamps, please visit the Kitschenette shop.
