This French decorative object features a theme borrowed from the Greco-Roman mythology, a centaur, half-man half-horse, holding with pride grapes in his right hand and a cup in his left. Known for their taste for wine, centaurs symbolized animal desires for the Greeks. The depiction of our centaur is quite exquisite. The golden tones of the painted iron contrast beautifully with the darker color of the custom base. The details of the face and body are skillfully done, the general movement is quite lively. A small hole in the center of the centaur's chest suggests that the piece may have been mounted on a wall, perhaps as part of a bigger scene.
