19th-Century Japanese Paintings on Silk
The pair of paintings are examples of Japanese art on silk from the late 19th century, also known as the Meiji period (1868-1912). They depict women, possibly geishas, in traditional kimonos. Painting on silk, or kenpon chakushoku, is a traditional practice in Japanese art that predates paper. Antique art such as this are historical limited editions (date of manufacture is 1890). Cherished back then - rare find today. The frames are described as "water gilt," which is an ancient and meticulous technique for applying gold leaf to wood. This process involves multiple layers of gesso and a clay-like substance called bole before the gold leaf is applied with water. The technique is known for creating a high-luster, brilliant finish and was commonly used for precious artifacts. The presence of "foxing" (a form of age-related spotting) is consistent with the age of the paintings on silk.
The pair of paintings are characteristic of 19th-century Japanese art, likely depicting geishas or bijin, which translates to "beautiful person". The artwork is hand-painted on silk, a traditional medium in Japan that predates the use of paper. This style of painting on silk is known as kenpon chakushoku. The specific time period, the late 19th century, is known as the Meiji period (1868-1912). The paintings portray the women in formal kimono robes with the traditional obi tied around the middle and geta, which are slip-on platform shoes.
