This elegant pendant lamp is a classic example of mid-century Italian design, created by renowned designer Massimo Vignelli for the historic Venini glassworks in Murano in the 1950s and 1960s. It is an iconic piece that embodies the essence of Venetian modernism: clean lines, noble materials, and a subtle play of colors that diffuses a warm, enveloping light.
Produced in Venini's Murano furnaces, the diffuser is made of satin-finish white opaline glass, with a smooth, translucent finish that softens the light. The surface features multicolored horizontal streaks—blue, green, red, and a touch of orange/black—overlapping in an irregular, artistic fashion, typical of the layering technique used in blown glass. These colored bands create a dynamic, iridescent effect: during the day, they appear as delicate veins, while when the lamp is turned on, the light filters through them, producing soft, evocative rainbow reflections. The upper fitting is made of brass or oxidized bronze, with a sturdy yet discreet fastening ring that ages gracefully over time. Designed early in Vignelli's career—while he was still a student at the University of Architecture in Venice—this model is part of the series of blown-glass lamps that revolutionized Venini lighting, elevating Murano glass from a kitsch object to a 20th-century icon. Influenced by Italian rationalism and the Bauhaus, the design prioritizes aesthetic functionality: the organic shape recalls nature, while the vibrant yet unobtrusive colors reflect post-war optimism. In a contemporary setting, this chandelier adds a touch of sculptural elegance, perfect over a dining table or in an entryway, where its diffused light creates an intimate and colorful atmosphere.
