in 1850 (at the age of 15), hodson began an apprenticeship with edmund hardy, a mapmaker, and worked for seven years at the goldsmiths' company. Upon completing his apprenticeship, he became a member of the goldsmiths and a freeman of the city of london. While still an apprentice, he was apprenticed as a printer to charles blair leighton, the artist and father of the oil painter edmund blair leighton, in 1851. There he learned the process of lithography. He also learned aquatint and drawing on wood from josiah wood whymper (wood engraver, illustrator and watercolorist). Hodson found that he preferred the creativity of watercolor to printmaking and worked as a professional artist from 1858, after studying at leigh's academy, the school of design, somerset house and later the royal academy. Very early in his career as an artist, in 1859, hodson was commissioned to paint queen victoria at the state opening of parliament. In 1860 he exhibited his work at the royal academy and the royal society of british artists. He became an associate member of the royal watercolour society (rws) in 1882 and a full member in 1890. For a time he was a member of the council of the rws and its acting secretary in 1896/97. From 1890 he was also a member of the royal society of british artists. Hodson taught drawing and watercolor painting at the crystal palace school of art (now defunct) for twelve years. He traveled throughout europe, painting landscapes and cityscapes. His paintings often depicted busy marketplaces and bustling streets. His style was delicate and impressionistic. Examples of his work can be found in the british museum, the v&a, the haworth art gallery in accrington, and the knohl collection. The royal collection archives hold two of his paintings—market scenes of bonn and abbeville. His paintings have sold at christie's, sotheby's, bonhams, and other auction houses. While working at the graphic, he met fellow artists hubert von herkomer, john ruskin, and william callow, whose influence is evident in hodson's work. He became close friends with william callow. Callow was 23 years hodson's senior, but the two died within months of each other. Shortly after her death, hodson's wife moved into the house in great missenden with william callow's widow for a while.when the london underground celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2013, london transport used two of his chromolithographs of the baker street underground in its advertising and one of them was used for a special issue of postage stamps.
