This original portrait painting of the European Tradition dates from around 1790 to 1815.
The painting is by an unidentified hand but has qualities that resemble the work of Pierre-Paul Prud'hon 1758–1823, Henri-François Riesener 1767–1828, François Gérard 1770–1837 and Louis Léopold Boilly 1761–1845.
The canvas and the painted surface have benefitted from cleaning, restoration and conservation, which was performed on our instruction, supervision and approval.
The painting is presented and supplied in its original frame. The frame has been restored and furnished with new replacement hanging fittings.
This antique painting is now in very good condition. It wants for nothing and is supplied ready to hang and display.
This evocative original oil on canvas portrait dates from around 1790 to 1815 and is attributed to the European School, possibly French. Although the artist remains unknown, the work demonstrates a high level of skill in both execution and emotional expression.
Entitled “La Gamine”, the portrait captures a youthful sitter with an androgynous charm, gazing thoughtfully into the distance with chin resting on hand. The loose brown jacket and open white shirt create a sense of casual intimacy, while the sitter’s delicate features, softly modelled in light, blur the boundaries of gender. The overall effect is a striking balance of elegance and informality, highly characteristic of late 18th to early 19th century portraiture.
Paintings of this period often sought to emphasise natural beauty and sensitivity, and this work exemplifies those ideals. The warm, muted palette and masterful handling of light highlight both the sitter’s contemplative mood and the refined artistry behind the composition.
Though the artist’s identity is lost to history, this painting stands as a rare and compelling antique portrait, appealing to collectors drawn to the Romantic spirit and the timeless fascination of androgynous beauty.
