Expertise by Professor Giancarlo Sestieri
Richard Wilson (1714-1782) was a Welsh landscape painter who worked both in Britain and Italy. Wilson is described in the Welsh Academy Encyclopedia of Wales as the "most distinguished painter Wales has ever produced and the first to appreciate the aesthetic possibilities of his country". In 1729 he moved to London where he began his artistic career under the apprenticeship of Thomas Wright, and he firstly started as a portrait painter. from 1750 to 1757 Wilson was in Italy, a journey undertaken on the advice of Francesco Zuccarelli (1702-1788). Thanks to that trip to Italy, he became a landscape painter. He was the first major British painter to concentrate on landscape. This lovely painting seems almost a sketch for a major work or a pictorial study in itself. The purpose of the painting is to bring out the trees as the absolute protagonists of the scene. The painting depicts two large trees with sparse foliage and strongly curved trunks in the foreground, while on the opposite direction we can see a path that goes up the hill where at the top of which a fortification is hinted at.
