This Thai rain drum is crafted in the style of the ancient Dong Son bronze drums of Northern Vietnam—one of the most iconic ceremonial objects of early Southeast Asian culture (c. 600 BCE–300 CE).
Made in the late 20th century from a dark pewter alloy, this piece faithfully recreates the classic features of a ceremonial rain drum:
- Concentric sunburst medallion representing power, fertility, and the cosmos.
- Bands of geometric patterns echoing ancient motifs of rice farming, water, and community.
- Four small frogs atop the surface, a traditional symbol of seasonal rain and agricultural prosperity.
- Flared base and ring handles, referencing drums used in rituals, feasts, and village ceremonies.
Rain drums were historically placed in community centers and struck during celebrations or prayers for rainfall. Today, they are sought after as accent tables, sculptural pedestals, and statement pieces.
This example features a deep charcoal patina with beautifully cast detailing.
