Offered is an original 18th-century copperplate-engraved map of Monmouthshire, Wales, drawn by John Rocque (1704–1762) and published in England Displayed by Adlard & Browne, London, 1769.
Rocque, a French-born cartographer active in London, was renowned for his precision and artistry. This edition from England Displayed represents a rare surviving example of his county maps.
Medium: Copperplate engraving on laid rag paper
Hand Coloring: Outlined and wash-tinted in period watercolor — a scarcer issue, as many were printed uncolored
Features: Compass rose with fleur-de-lis, scale bar in English miles, engraved hachures for relief
Authenticity: Verified 18th-century print showing plate impression, rag texture, and brush-applied color
A hand-written note on the verso records that it was “purchased in Wales, 1976; believed printed c.1770.”
Size:
Plate area: approx. 7.5" × 6.25"
Frame: 12.5" × 10.5" with a 2" mat
Condition: Light toning and minor foxing consistent with age; colors remain attractive. Nicely presented under mat and glass in a period-style frame.
An elegant and genuine Georgian-era map — perfect for framing in a study, library, or gallery wall.
