Painted by Caesar Delia, a serving British soldier stationed in Malta, the work reflects both his first-hand experience of military life and his amateur but earnest artistic eye. Entitled "Irish Infantry", the watercolour features three soldiers of the British Army, each depicted in full regalia with distinctive poses and roles.

The painting depicts three uniformed figures standing in formal poses, each rendered with an untrained but sincere hand. All three soldiers wear the distinctive red coats, black trousers, and white helmets characteristic of the late 19th-century British Army. The central figure, likely an officer, stands proudly holding the regimental flag of the Royal Irish Regiment. He and the figure to his left—also presumably an officer—wear ceremonial sashes, sport grand moustaches, and carry ornate swords.
