A charming and historically evocative naive antique watercolour, this 1883 uniform study captures a moment in time when the British Empire stood near the height of its global power. Painted by Caesar Delia, a serving British soldier stationed in Malta, the work reflects both his first-hand experience of military life and his amateur but earnest artistic eye. Entitled "English Infantry", the watercolour features three soldiers of the British Army, each depicted in full regalia with distinctive poses and roles.
The central figure—likely an officer—is portrayed with a commanding stance, complete with a ceremonial sword and a splendid moustache, typical of the period’s military fashion. To his left, a bugler stands mid-salute, adding a sense of ceremonial purpose, while on the right, a rifleman holds his weapon upright, fixed with a bayonet. All three are dressed in the quintessential British red coat, complemented by black trousers and white sun helmets—an ensemble synonymous with British imperial military identity during the late 19th century.
Painted during Delia’s summer leave in 1883, this piece was created while he was stationed in Malta—a critical outpost of the British Empire, serving as both a naval base and medical hub. Positioned strategically between Gibraltar and the Suez Canal, Malta played a vital role in the logistics and projection of British power across the Mediterranean and into India. It was in this bustling imperial context that Delia, surrounded by the daily routines of the military machine, found inspiration to document the uniforms and character of his comrades.
Though executed with amateur skill, the painting possesses an undeniable charm. Its naïve style—simple in form but rich in detail—lends it a folk-art quality that speaks to both personal expression and historical value. As such, it offers a rare and authentic glimpse into the lived experience of a British soldier-artist during the Empire’s expansive phase.
This watercolour is housed in a later hand-painted black wooden frame with a gilt mount, which complements the historic feel of the piece. The back is lined with antique papers, and it is ready to hang. Measuring approximately 27.5cm x 22.5cm, it would make a distinctive decorative piece for collectors of military memorabilia, folk art, or British imperial history. Both aesthetically and historically significant, this is a superb example of 19th-century military folk art—made all the more compelling by its genuine naivety and rich contextual background.
