It has original shipping labels from the American Railway Express Agency, which was a national package delivery service that operated in the United States from 1918 to 1975. Express delivery in the early 19th century was almost all by horse, whether by stagecoach or riders on horseback. As railroads developed and expanded throughout the United States, linking towns of all sizes, stagecoaches and horseback travel gave way to rail. See less
