A refined 19th-century Dutch kidney-shaped writing desk, masterfully crafted in mahogany and richly inlaid with floral marquetry. This elegant form features a flowing serpentine top and a rare degree of inlay detail—even the interior kneehole recess is marquetry-veneered, a mark of superior craftsmanship.

The desk measures 42 inches wide, 20.5 inches deep, and 30 inches high. The central drawer is 14.5 inches wide by 14 inches deep and 3.5 inches high. It is flanked by two banks of four drawers each, measuring 8 inches wide by 12 inches deep and 3.5 inches high. All drawers are lockable and include the original working brass key and escutcheons.

The intricate marquetry includes stylized tulips, bellflowers, vines, urns overflowing with blossoms, paired birds, and delicate insects. Each motif carries traditional symbolism: tulips for prosperity, bellflowers for steadfastness, birds for freedom, and insects such as butterflies for transformation and beauty. The top is bordered with a continuous floral garland, unifying the composition.

This desk is both sculptural and functional—a rare survivor of Dutch marquetry work that reflects artistry on every surface, front and back.
