Magnificent French Empire Style Drop-Leaf Writing Desk in Fine Flamed Mahogany and Gilded Bronzes, 19th Century
We present a splendid example of a French drop-leaf writing desk dating back to the 19th century.
Materials and Workmanship:
Wood: Crafted entirely from flamed mahogany (acajou flammé), the piece boasts a rich and vibrant grain, with butterfly and book-like motifs that create a striking visual impact (particularly visible on the front and inside the cabinet).
The deep, warm color of the mahogany is enhanced by a buffer polish that emphasizes its preciousness.
Structure: The solid rectangular frame is topped with an elegant black Belgian marble top, adding a touch of refinement and practicality.
Gilded Bronzes: The gilded bronze details are essential and refined, in keeping with the aesthetic canons of the Empire. They include:
Side Columns: Two imposing, smooth columns flank the structure, resting on a circular plinth base.
Capitals and Bases: The columns are enriched at the top and bottom with finely chiseled bronze capitals and bases featuring classic rosette and braid motifs, reminiscent of classical architecture.
Interior: The large flap, when opened, serves as a spacious, leather-covered writing surface.
The interior reveals a cleverly organized compartment, with a central shelf and a series of small mahogany drawers that provide space for stationery and documents. Two secret compartments are also included.
Functional Configuration:
Upper Section: Features a large vertical flap panel (abattànt) that opens to reveal the writing area and the furnished interior.
Lower Part: Below the drop-leaf door, the cabinet is completed by a set of three full-width drawers, providing additional storage space.
Dimensions:
97 x 46 cm (84 cm open), height 143 cm
Condition:
The cabinet is in excellent overall condition, consistent with its age and historical use. The mahogany has developed a beautiful patina over time. The bronzes are well preserved. Pad polish.
