Splendid and luminous landscape of Portofino, Italy Work exhibited in 1933 at the Permanent Society of Fine Arts in Milan Signed lower left, label on the back Giovanni Molteni (Cantù, 1898 – Sorengo, 1990) trained under the aegis of the painter Ugo Bernasconi and, after the experience of the First World War, moved to Milan where he frequented Carlo Carrà, Arturo Martini, Mario Sironi and Arturo Tosi. Fundamental to his development, from both an artistic and emotional point of view, was his participation in the expedition of the airship Italia to the North Pole, from which he gained the nickname “painter of the Arctic”. In the 1930s he regularly participated in the exhibitions of the Permanente in Milan. In 1933, from 11 March to 11 April, he participated in the 4th Art Exhibition of the Regional Fascist Union of Fine Arts of Lombardy at the Palazzo della Permanente in Milan with the painting: La cava di Marmi. During the Allied bombings of Milan in 1943, his studio was almost entirely destroyed, along with his works. In 1949, he held a solo exhibition at the Galleria del Milione in Milan, which dedicated the monograph "15 Watercolors and 4 Drawings by Giovanni Molteni" to him, with a note by Carlo Carrà. In 1952, Molteni was invited to the International Exhibition of Watercolors from 1800 to 1950 held in Delft, representing Italy, along with Giorgio Morandi, Gino Severini, Filippo De Pisis, and Arturo Tosi. Exhibitions followed in Lugano and Paris. In 1953, he participated in the National Art Exhibition, Brera and Permanente Biennale, with the painting "Ulivi del Garda."
