Exceptional Impressionist oil on panel painting made in France around 1940. Impressionist in style, it depicts an urban scene with a calm and luminous atmosphere. In the foreground, several houses with traditional Breton architecture can be seen. The houses are arranged to form a small neighborhood. In the background, a church or cathedral stands out, lending a monumental air to the landscape. Sunlight seems to softly bathe the scene, creating a sense of calm. All this with visible, material brushstrokes in specific areas and soft colors that capture the light and the atmosphere of the city without excessively precise details, but with a rich palette of warm and harmonious tones.
Impressionism, born in France in the last third of the 19th century, was an artistic movement essentially defined through painting. It was primarily characterized by its ultimate aspiration to capture the light of a specific moment in the works, for which it used a disjointed, material, and very rapid brushstroke.
Thanks to technical and scientific advances, which allowed for the creation of new pigments, the use of pure colors also spread. They achieved a purity and saturation of colors unthinkable until then. Complementary colors also became fundamental, along with the type of brushstroke and the total absence of drawing. For this same reason, the shadows went from including black in their composition to being called "colored shadows," mixing complementary colors to darken them without the need for black. This also helped to create a greater sense of depth. This work exemplifies many of the style's characteristics. It perfectly reflects both the architecture and the serenity of an everyday moment, inviting the viewer to immerse themselves in this picturesque town.
