His themes are simple, dear to his sensitivity, which is awakened by the sight of vacationers contemplating, like him, the shifting clouds, the swirling waves, and the slow pitching of sailboats on a barely disturbed sea. These are sequences of successive perceptions in a fleeting time, and this is the subject of Jean-Jacques René's painting: the passing of time, which we must recover and perpetuate through color.
