Plates: (3) Guest at the Capulet Ball/ Paris/ Juliet & Friend To Lady Capulet
Lady Capulet in Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet is Juliet's mother and a high-status matriarch of the Capulet family. She embodies the formal relationships and social expectations of Elizabethan women, prioritizing Juliet's marriage to the wealthy Paris for status over her daughter's emotional well-being. Lady Capulet has a distant, formal relationship with Juliet, relies on the Nurse for parenting, and is ultimately a subservient wife to Lord Capulet, a role that limits her own agency.
Oliver Messel was a renowned British designer (1904–1978) known for his work in theater.
"Romeo And Juliet w/ Designs by Oliver Messel" 1936 SHAKESPEARE, William published by B.T. Batsford
In 1936 Oliver Messel designed the set and costumes for the film of Romeo and Juliet produced by MGM in Hollywood. The film was directed by George Cukor and starred Norma Shearer (to whom the book is dedicated) and Leslie Howard. This charming edition of the play was published as a souvenir of Messel's work on the film. Shakespeare's text is accompanied by high-quality reproductions of the original set and costume drawings created by Messel.
