The man looks straight at the viewer having taken off his glasses and paused in his reading. The painting was sold in a Sotheby's London, October 1998 auction as depicting a scholar. However I believe that this is part of a larger altarpiece of the Virgin and Child with St Joseph. Joseph was depicted in this manner in larger panel paintings by Joos van Cleve and Marcellus Coffermans during the first half of the 16th Century. Cleaned and restored on a cradled panel. In an attractive modern burled wood frame. See less
