"Red Trees in the Forest" walks you down a wooded path where the growth is so dense, and the foliage … Read more "Red Trees in the Forest" walks you down a wooded path where the growth is so dense, and the foliage so luxuriant, that sunlight reaches the forest floor only in sparse, sketchy patches.

"Red Trees" was executed on a 30" x 36" canvas measuring 36" x 43" including traditional frame. The work employs an artful blend of impressionistic and realist style. The artist creates texture, using copious quantities of oil paint--most noticeably on the tree trunks which dominate the painting. Thick layers of paint paired with marked vertical brush strokes, recall the rough striations of thick bark on mature trees. The tree trunks appear almost purple in the late afternoon light.

This work was painted in 1994 and inspired by family walks through Southwest Michigan's Warren Woods. We show the painting here, both on the easel in our studio, and on a living room wall.
