Landscape with Trees and Clouds
Oil on canvas, c. 1900–1910
Canvas: 12.5 x 15.5 in. | Framed: 18 x 21 x 2 in.
This evocative early 20th-century landscape is the work of Lucille Wilcox Joullin, a San Francisco–based painter whose career developed during an era when women artists faced significant barriers to recognition. Executed circa 1900–1910, the composition captures a windswept tree silhouetted against a luminous, cloud-filled sky — a testament to Joullin’s sensitivity to mood and atmosphere.
Lucille Wilcox studied at the San Francisco School of Design, where she was part of a generation of women artists striving to establish themselves in a field overwhelmingly dominated by men. In 1907 she married Amédée Joullin (1862–1917), a French-born artist known for his Western and Native American subjects. While Amédée received steady recognition during his lifetime, Lucille carved out her own artistic path, producing landscapes and tonalist works that reflect the influence of both American Impressionism and the Bay Area’s plein-air tradition.
Joullin’s paintings are increasingly appreciated today for their rarity and for the historical perspective they provide on the contributions of women artists in early California art. This example, preserved in its original gilt frame, demonstrates her mastery of tonal harmony and her ability to infuse natural scenery with a quiet sense of drama.
Verso: inscribed on the stretcher with the name Thos. H. Walker, likely an early owner.
