Carved entirely from one block of Verdite, a very hard stone unique to sub-Saharan Africa, this dancing woman is a fine example of the incredible talent of the Shona Master Sculptors of Zimbabwe. There are only a handful of true master sculptors in Zimbabwe and the sculptor of this piece, Peter Chikumbirike, is acknowledged as among the best of even these few. The skill of the Chikumbirike family is renowned worldwide, their work is exhibited and collected worldwide.
The Chikumbirike family is internationally recognized as Shona master sculptors. Peter was born in 1958, and grew up as the 5th child in a family of 18 children. He never attended any formal art institution. His sculpting skill comes from experience and natural talent. Peter carves in hard stones native to Zimbabwe such as Verdite, Cobalt Stone, Butter Jade and Spring Stone.
The talent of Peter Chikumbirike is plainly evident in this sculpture. This exceptional scultpure has been rendered in extreme detail, in dynamic movement as she tightens the cord around her waist in preparation to begin dancing. Her gaze is life-like and serene and every detail from the face, to the body, to the clothing is meticulously brought to life from the browns and greens of the variegated Verdite by Chikumbirike's carving.
Originally purchased from Crisson & Hind African Gallery in Bermuda by a private collector. This is a true museum quality work of art and a brilliant addition to any collection. Accompanying the scultpure are the original gallery brochure and literture provided when the piece was purchased.
