Born in Casale Monferrato, Sereno studied at the Accademia Albertina in Turin, where he developed a strong foundation in academic painting. His early career focused on historical compositions, and he exhibited works such as Il Chilo (1881) in Milan, and Monacanda Before Pronouncing the Vows and Monacanda, an Hour Before Taking the Monastic Clothes (1884) in Rome and Turin. Other notable pieces include Discovery of a Bersagliere and A Kiss of Furtive Origin. ​ Sereno was also a prolific muralist. He created frescoes for the Duomo of Casale Monferrato between 1860 and 1861, depicting saints and angels in a neo-Byzantine style. His work adorned several churches in Turin, including the Sanctuary of the Consolata, the Church of San Secondo, and Santa Maria Ausiliatrice. In 1865, he painted Angels and the Assumption of the Virgin for the parish church of Fubine. ​ Beyond frescoes, Sereno contributed to theater decoration, designing the ceiling of the Teatro di Torino and the curtain of the Teatro Vittorio Alfieri. He also designed mosaics and stained glass windows, showcasing his versatility as an artist. ​ Throughout his career, Sereno exhibited at the Turin Promotrice from 1844 to 1888. While public reception was modest, he enjoyed considerable royal patronage, underscoring his significance in the Italian art scene of his time.​ This piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker.
