Vintage acrylic on canvas from the 1970s by Vito Capone
100 cm x 100 cm
Vito Capone was born in Rome to parents from Salento and studied art in Naples. He taught painting techniques at the Academy of Fine Arts in Foggia, where he was director from 1988 to 1991. Having moved to Puglia in the early 1960s, he took an active part in the region's cultural life. In the 1970s, he frequented Milan regularly, exhibiting his work in numerous solo and group exhibitions. Abroad, he held exhibitions in Spain, the United States, England, Romania, and more. In the late 1970s, he abandoned painting to experiment with new materials, including linen, hemp, wood, and finally paper, which he used as the defining medium of his entire oeuvre.
from 1980 onwards, for over a decade, he joined the Roman gallery Artivisive, with which he exhibited in numerous Italian and international cities, including at the World Expos in Basel, Stockholm, and Bologna, as well as in the UK, Hungary, Japan, Germany, Austria, Belgium, the Netherlands, Sweden, and Denmark.
In the 1990s, the distinctive nature of his artistic research attracted considerable international interest. During this period, his exhibition activity intensified in the United States, Canada, Japan, and Europe. In 1992, one of his works was included in The Artist and Book in Twentieth-Century Italy at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, which later traveled to the Guggenheim Museum in Venice. In 2011, he participated in the 54th Venice Biennale with a work entitled Commistioni possibili.
His works are featured in public institutions, museums, and private collections in Italy and abroad, and his work is documented in the specialized press.
