Mathieu Matégot:
1910 - 2001
Mathieu Matégot was born in 1910 in Tapio-Sully, Hungary. He studied at the School of Fine Arts in Budapest from 1925, where he met Vasarely. He arrived in Paris in 1931.
From 1939 to 1944, he devoted himself to tapestry work.
During World War II, he was assigned to a mechanical engineering factory where he worked with steel and its derivatives.
Upon his return to Paris, he devoted himself once again to his passion, tapestry.
In his work as a decorator, he combined metal, rattan, perforated sheet metal, leather, and glass, meeting with great success.
Impressed by perforated sheet metal in Germany during the war, he devised a new use for metal in decoration.
Growing demand prompted him to diversify his production and distribution capacity. He added factories in Casablanca and London to his Paris workshop.
In 1964, he decided to devote his time exclusively to tapestry and gave up interior design.
The first non-figurative painter of cartoons, accustomed to mural optics as a painter and theater decorator, he produced new cartoons in a completely innovative style, published in Aubusson.
In his early days, he was influenced by Jean Lurçat, but later broke free from this influence to adopt a rigorously abstract approach.
He expressed himself solely through symbols, rhythms, and color schemes inspired by the natural beauty of wool fibers.
He was awarded the title of Officer of the Order of Arts and Letters, the Grand Prix d'Honneur at the 1953 International Exhibition in Madrid, Gold Medal of the Society for the Encouragement of Art and Industry in 1955, Diploma of Honor at the Brussels World's Fair in 1958, and Gold Medal at the 12th Milan Triennial, he is recognized as a major artist.
His well-deserved reputation earned him private and public commissions for projects in France, including La Maison de la Radio, the Casino de Cannes, the Seine Maritime Prefecture in Rouen, and Air France, for which he was responsible for both design and construction.
