“Arteaga” by Jurriaan Molenaar
In Arteaga, Jurriaan Molenaar translates his lifelong fascination with space, light, perspective, and structure into a serene yet powerful visual language. Painted in acrylic on linen, this series of four large-scale works—three measuring 80 x 110 cm (31.5 x 43.3 in.) and one commanding piece of 120 x 150 cm (47.2 x 59.1 in.)—is based on an open architectural framework by the sea. One of the 80 x 110 has recently been sold.
Molenaar’s compositions echo Le Corbusier’s superb vision of openness, where architecture becomes not just a built form but a philosophy of living—structures that breathe with light, horizon, and space. In Arteaga, walls and beams are reduced to elemental planes, shadows become architecture in themselves, and the horizon anchors the eye in infinite calm.
Molenaar studied at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Amsterdam (Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten), founded in 1870 by King William III. This classic academy has long been a meeting ground for philosophers, academics, and artists—a crucible where ideas are tested and visions expanded.
For Molenaar, painting is not about representation, but about creating a constructed space on canvas—an architecture of perception. In Arteaga, he offers collectors not only a painting, but an experience: a moment of timeless openness, where structure and light dissolve into balance and clarity.
