This lamp is fashioned from a polychrome-glazed pottery figure originally produced as a roof ornament in China, likely during the Ming dynasty (1368–1644). The figure, richly modeled and finished in bold turquoise, amber, and deep brown glazes, depicts a seated warrior or court figure in ceremonial garb.
Comparable examples are held in museum collections, including the Chrysler Museum of Art (catalogued as a Ming dynasty roof ornament). Originally created as architectural elements, these Shiwan-type glazed figures were often later repurposed in the 19th–20th centuries for decorative use in the West. This piece has been mounted on a brass base with an electrical fitting, transforming it into a lamp while preserving its sculptural presence.
