A remarkable and rare hermann bauer german silver-mounted smoked glass cigar ashtray, steeped in history and symbolism. This finely crafted piece features a heavy circular smoked glass bowl fitted with an 800 silver collar and cigar rest, hallmarked with the german crescent moon & crown, silver standard 800, and a crowned maker’s mark hb.
the silver collar is not only functional but beautifully engraved with lodge-style symbolism:
ks monogram beneath stag antlers and a radiant cross — motifs strongly associated with st. Hubertus, the patron saint of hunters.
ala initials, likely those of the recipient or lodge chapter.
two precise dates: 3.11.38 – 1.9.40, marking a commemorative or service period.
this was almost certainly a presentation piece commissioned for a member of a german or austrian hunting lodge, fraternal society, or private club, making it a unique, one-off artifact with direct provenance to pre-wwii germany.
with its combination of hallmarked german silver, cigar-smoking function, and engraved fraternal iconography, this ashtray offers a fascinating crossover for collectors of:
antique silver and hallmark enthusiasts
german/austrian fraternal lodge or hunting memorabilia
art deco period smoking accessories
a rare survival with both decorative and historical appeal.
the condition of the piece is very good for its age. Some expected nibbles to the faceted edges of the glass, surface wear and patina consistent with use. Silver collar and engraving remain clear and crisp. Please see photographs for details.
