A museum-worthy discovery, this Spanish Revival fireplace tile set by D&M (Davies & McDonald, Los Angeles, c. 1928–1939) represents one of the rarest finds in California tile collecting. Included are two scenic mural tiles, a complete six-tile central mural, and an expansive arrangement of 6” × 6” field tiles that together form a striking surround measuring approximately 59 inches wide by 53 inches tall, with a firebox opening of about 35 1/4 inches wide by 29 1/4 inches tall. Encountering even a single intact mural from this golden era is a rarity; to find multiple murals preserved with their original field tiles is almost unheard of. This set captures the artistry, craftsmanship, and romance of Southern California’s Spanish Colonial Revival movement at its peak.
Founded in Los Angeles around 1928 by John (Luther) Davies and John McDonald, D&M produced tiles that remain among the most coveted of the period. Renowned for their richly saturated glazes, bold Hispano-Moresque motifs, and durable clays, D&M’s work defined the aesthetic of the 1920s–1930s Spanish Revival era. Complete ensembles of this scale and importance almost never surface on the open market, making this an opportunity suited not only for restorations and high-end design projects, but also for serious collectors seeking a centerpiece of historic significance.
Complete Spanish Revival fireplace sets from D&M are virtually never seen outside of museum or private collections. To encounter not only the original field tiles but also two scenic murals and a full six-tile centerpiece is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. For the serious collector or discerning designer, this grouping represents the pinnacle of California tile artistry from the 1920s–1930s and would be nearly impossible to replicate or replace.
