Although many architects and furniture designers of the Bauhaus era were intent on providing well-designed homes and impeccable furnishings for the common people, the Barcelona chair was an exception. It was designed for the Spanish royals to oversee the opening ceremonies of the exposition. The shape is thought to have been derived from Roman folding chairs known as curule chairs, padded stools used by the Roman aristocracy.
