This hand-woven oriental Zanjan rug was made in Iran during the 1960s. Traditionally flatwoven and dyed in shades of rustic red and ivory. The centerpiece is adorned with a large, geometric medallion that extends from top to bottom.
Zanjan or Zanjan Hamadan rugs are a type of traditional Persian rug originating from the city of Zanjan, located in northwest Iran, near the Hamadan region. The city is an important stop on the Iranian Silk Road. It is also a place where high-quality Persian rugs are made. All are entirely handmade by nomadic tribes. Zanjan rugs often feature geometric patterns, with motifs such as rhombuses, polygons, and stylized floral motifs. Typical colors include reds, navy blues, blues, and beiges. Strong, saturated hues are often used. These rugs are typically made of high-quality wool with a cotton warp. The wool can be quite thick, making the rug durable and long-lasting. The knot used to weave these rugs is most often a symmetrical knot — a Turkish knot — which gives them a sturdy feel. The Zanjan style is closely related to other rugs from the Hamadan region, but Zanjan rugs typically have a more refined and structured appearance compared to the more casual Hamadan designs. Zanjan Hamadan rugs are valued for their durability, handcrafted craftsmanship, and authenticity, which conveys a sense of Persian tradition.
The rug is in original vintage condition. It has signs of wear due to age, fabric loss, abrasions and damage to the fleece. The rug will be professionally cleaned and ready for use before shipping.
