Cirano castelfranchi's "view of the naviglio di via san damiano," 1952, oil on poplar plywood, depicts a view of old … Read more Cirano castelfranchi's "view of the naviglio di via san damiano," 1952, oil on poplar plywood, depicts a view of old milan, a milanese landscape painted with confident, bold brushstrokes. The painting is in good condition, housed in a modern ivory-lacquered frame with gilded corner trim. The romantic ponte delle sirenette (mermaid bridge), now visible in the heart of milan's parco sempione, is depicted in the foreground. Designed by architect francesco tettamanzi, the bridge was built between 1840 and 1842 by the firm rubini-scalini-falck & c. Of dongo. The decorations were created from plaster models by benedetto cacciatori. The bridge was privately commissioned to be placed on the naviglio di via san damiano, now via uberto visconti di modrone.

on the parapets were two latin inscriptions commemorating the construction of the first iron bridge in milan in 1841 during the rule of ferdinand i of austria. A mermaid holding an oar was placed on each of the extremities of the pylons. The pillars were originally decorated with cast iron friezes, anchors and swans holding festoons at the top, and lion heads at the bottom.
