A large, jet-black Chinese Modern porcelain fishbowl planter with a detailed hand-painted Koi fish jumping out of the water and captured splashing about in mid-motion. This type of vessel is sometimes called a "Fish Bowl" because that is its traditional purpose as an object. The Koi is painted in gold gilt with incised sgraffito sculpting that outlines and details the figural and popular fish. It sits atop a dark lacquered wooden stand. These large planter urns are traditionally used to keep carp contained in the winter, but nowadays they are more often used as planters or as decorative objects displayed alone or on a stand.
The sophisticated indoor planter is made from fine-quality porcelain with a high-luster black finish and hand-painted gold detailing. The image of the Koi repeats twice with a variation of movement when compared one to the other. The bowl has a flat lip on its crest that is approximately 1" wide. The inside to the bowl is porcelain white. There is no makers mark that can be identified on this unmarked 1990s sophisticated vessel. It is presumed to be made in China.
The wooden display stand, often sold separately, is designed to elevate the planter and complement its traditional style. The black lacquered traditional wooden Fish Bowl stand is included with the sale.
