This antique porcelain enamel factory sign is a striking piece of early 20th-century industrial history. Measuring 20 inches wide by 8 inches tall, it was produced by Steere & Sons of Chicago, a well-known manufacturer of commercial & safety signage during the early to mid-1900s. The bold red block lettering & white enamel background where “STAIRWAY” is spelled out are the design characteristics that were typical in the 1920’s. This sign was clearly a functional marker inside the former Chicago nickel factory from which it was salvaged. Signs like this one were used to guide workers & visitors safely through multi-story structures, like the eight-story factory/warehouse where this sign was originally installed.
The porcelain enamel finish not only gave the sign a bright, highly visible surface but also provided durability against timCommon e & heavy industrial use. Today, signs like this are used in many places & are appreciated not only for their utilitarian roots but also for their graphic appeal. The weathered patina, areas of wear, & spots of rusting add to its authentic character, telling the story of decades of service in an industrial setting.
Perfect for collectors of antique signage, industrial décor enthusiasts, or anyone looking to add a statement piece with both history & bold styling, this “STAIRWAY” sign captures the grit & charm of America’s Industrial Revolution & factory era. It displays beautifully in lofts, workshops, restaurants, or home collections where authentic vintage design is admired & celebrated.
