The five paintings of the "Rocky Shores" series, part of the larger West Coast series, were painted one after the … Read more The five paintings of the "Rocky Shores" series, part of the larger West Coast series, were painted one after the other, all sharing multi-colored skies and waters, all paying homage to monolithic rocks, rising like sculpture out of the seas.

"Sunrise Seas and Skies" pays homage to the work of sun and sea together. Huge rocks are worn smooth by eons of pounding waves. In morning sun, they shine golden, mirroring the warm tones of sun and sky. Conversely in shadow, they appear cold, dark and gloomy.

Please notice that surfaces that appear solid are actually multi-hued; they are painted in the post-impressionist manner--with heavily applied paint and very textured brushwork, mimicking rough craggy surfaces.

This is a smaller painting, 14" x 18" and measuring 20." x24" with frame--but it makes a powerful, powerful statement. (Seen here on a 36 inch-wide wall.)

The paintings in this series are VERY "painterly" and emblematic of the post impressionist movement. Like impressionism, the artist uses thick paint, texture and vivid color. But unlike the impressionist, the post impressionist (in this case, George) focuses on both shape and design as they appear in nature, giving a subtle nod to abstraction.
