Pair of antique asian female sculptures, indonesian figures from the late 1700s, depicting two women in hand-carved and lacquered wood … Read more Pair of antique asian female sculptures, indonesian figures from the late 1700s, depicting two women in hand-carved and lacquered wood with extensive paint loss that gives them the charm of the era. Standing upright on an oval base, they are crafted from a single piece of wood with the arms and forearms joined together. One right arm has been replaced. Both antique asian art sculptures have a worn cotton bodice trimmed with braid. The hair is lacquered and gathered at the back. The arms stretched forward seem to be offering something as an offering. The pierced ears suggest the former presence of earrings. Traces of blue on the legs, a greenish gray on the body, the palms of the hands are dyed red, and black around the eyes: these are the remaining polychromes of this fascinating finish. The craquelure and oxidation of the pigments suggest the late 1700s.
the two oriental sculptures are in fair condition and are stable, but have some flaws, discoloration, and signs of wear consistent with their age.
