MODERNIST GOLD-LEAF METAL AND GLASS COCKTAIL TABLE
Designed by Paul M. Jones | Unmarked
45" W x 24" D x 17" H
A rectangular cocktail table designed by Paul M. Jones, the gold-leaf overlaid metal frame has distinctive Neoclassical lines with bold tapering squared legs and a stretcher of stylized interlocking form beneath tapering legs. The thick inset glass top is surrounded by a stepped rim. Of remarkable quality - all solid iron elements, beautifully finished and built to last the test of time.
Paul M. Jones was an American designer active in the mid twentieth century, best known for his use of gold and silver leaf applied to metal furniture frames. His work combined neoclassical and modernist influences, often featuring spare but elegant silhouettes enhanced with luminous surfaces. Jones’ tables, consoles, and lighting were distributed through decorators and retailers during the 1950s and 1960s and are recognized today for their distinctive decorative finishes.
An example of the table in a slightly different size was offered at Christie's, New York in October of 2019 where it achieved $ 4,750 USD (Live Auction 18793 The Collector: Property from Four American Collections, lot 639). The table remains a current production by the design firm of John Boone, protege of Paul M. Jones.
