With our absolute highest compliments Bay Colony Antiques takes the utmost pleasure in offering this exceptional antique sewing work table. We have never encountered an antique sewing table quite as rare or as practical as this example and we could not be any prouder to bring it to market. The table is designed in two sections with the top component crafted with an elongated handle so that it may be picked up off the base and carried away. This feature is truly a desirable and unique element and undoubtedly makes this sewing table among the rarest pieces in its form ever known to be made. In the later half of the 18th century single drawer tables with flat tops were common in households and referred to as "work tables" as the lady of the home would diligently work all day seated at the table sewing and mending quilts and clothing. The rarity of this design and the functional practicality of the removable top section makes this table superior to nearly all variations made during this period in history.
The entire piece is comprised of a wonderful selection of mahogany lumber that is finished brilliantly and illuminates with exposure to daylight. The single drawer blindly concealed in the base section features masterful dovetailed joinery, an oval inlaid escutcheon, and English Yew wood used to build the drawer box interior. The case is adorned with fantastic string inlay, either made of holly or satinwood, to create an illustrious contrast against the darker mahogany. The top unit features scallop scrolled side profiles and four sewing implement drawers which each have string inlay and wonderful knobs crafted from a rare material. There is a conveniently placed shelving tier situated beneath the drawer and neatly within the leg space.. The base section is decorated with elliptical, rectangular, and line inlay work and stands on four finely tapered legs. We note two old repairs to the handle which were expertly restored and several areas on the upper case which were given expert attention. This sewing table is in remarkable condition and is well suited to belong to a collector that will cherish this piece for years to come.
This antique sewing table measures 44" tall overall from the floor to the top handle. The base section measures 21 1/2" wide x 16 1/4" deep x 29" tall while the top work section measures 20 1/2" wide x 10" deep x 16" tall up to the handle.
