Vittorio Matteo Corcos, Italian, (1859–1933)
Original portrait of Anna Maria Borghese by Vittorio Matteo Corcos. Oil on canvas. Unsigned. Ex-Sotheby's.
An exquisite and tender portrait by renowned Italian painter Vittorio Matteo Corcos, celebrated for his refined depictions of elegant women and children from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This oil on canvas captures a poised young girl in a lavish pink silk and lace dress, set against a verdant garden background and classical stone balustrade.
Executed with Corcos’s signature realism and sensitivity, the sitter's gentle gaze, delicate posture, and finely rendered clothing evoke a serene innocence and aristocratic grace. Subtle play of light and texture—seen in the luster of her dress, soft curls, and the scattered petals at her feet—showcases Corcos’s mastery of both psychological portraiture and technical execution.
Vittorio Matteo Corcos was an Italian artist known for his paintings of elegant women in repose. Born on October 4, 1859 in Livorno, Italy, he studied drawing and painting at the Academia di Belle Arti in Florence under Enrico Pollastrini. At 19, Corcos left Florence for Naples and continued his studies with Domenico Morelli, whose work he greatly admired. He supplemented his income as a portrait painter by illustrating magazines, posters, and book covers. In 1880, the artist established himself in the Parisian art scene, falling into the circles of Léon Bonnat and Giovanni Boldini. Corcos wemt on to exhibit his works at the Paris Salons of 1881, 1882, and 1885. Returning to Italy in 1886, he became highly sought after portrait painter for Florentine aristocracy. The artist died on November 8, 1933 in Florence, Italy. Today, his works are held in the collections of the Uffizi in Florence and the Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Moderna in Rome.
