The five paintings of the "Rocky Shores" series, part of the larger West Coast series, were painted one after the other, all sharing multi-colored skies and waters, all paying homage to monolithic rocks, rising like sculpture out of the sea.
The West Coast paintings were all created in 1987, except for this one which was revisited in 2024--a testament to the artist's obsession with his subject matter.
The paintings in this series are all "painterly" and emblematic of the post impressionist movement. Like impressionism, the artist uses thick paint, texture and vivid color. But unlike the impressionist, the post impressionist (in this case, George) focuses on shapes and design as they appear in nature, giving a subtle nod to abstraction.
