Untitled Harlequin, an original mixed media on canvas by Roger Etienne, is a piece for the true collector. Etienne's iconic use of french newspapers pasted onto paper to become part of the drawing surface is executed no better than this work presented here. This example is a very rare example not often found in the US. Etienne, born Roger Etienne Everaert, signed works painted in the US under the name "Etienne" and used his birth name "Everaert" on works executed during any number of his visits and long stays in Europe. Etienne often included the word "Paris" in his US creations, but this was simply a marketing technique he used to command higher prices. His signed Everaert works were created in Paris and Etienne brought very few of them back to the US – this is one of those rare works.
This work is an early 1961 example of what became his signature style for which he became known in the US during the late 1960s and 1970s. Both Etienne's technical talent and his choice of subject matter pair perfectly with this custom archival wood frame. This masterful work would make a great addition to an art collection and enhance most any home, perfect for those who have an affinity for figurative works, post-impressionism, and 1960s Parisian street art.
Roger Etienne was born Roger Etienne Everaert in Bruges, Belgium on December 6, 1923 to a Belgian father and Flemish mother – Alphonse Charles Everaert, an arguably renowned artist of his day, and Esther Marie Julie Blondeel. Etienne was a well listed and popular French impressionist who worked in a variety of media: oil, gouache, pastel and charcoal. Some of his paintings are a collage with pieces of French newspaper incorporated in them.
He painted landscapes, pictures of wide eyed children, and nudes. He worked at Pablo Picasso's Workshop and Marc Chagall commissioned him to do work on the renovation of the Paris Opera House.
Etienne lived and was active in both France and the USA. He died in 2011 at his home in Los Angeles.
