"Finished, Unfinished Quintet," an original oil on linen by Leta Ramos, is a piece for the true collector. The painting possesses a three-dimensionality, enhanced by the juxtaposition of an intentionally 2D background. Ramos' play of color and shadow, showcases her talent to challenge the viewer's eye. Leta was married to world renowned artist Mel Ramos for over 60 years. This masterful work is extremely striking in person due to its large size and pairs perfectly with its original minimalist frame. This painting would make a great addition to an art collection and enhance most any home, perfect for those who have an affinity for abstract paintings, contemporary art, and color rich works.
Lolita “Leta” Alice Ramos was an American model and artist. Leta was born in California, where she would spend her entire life devoted to education and various forms of art. She began her foray into the art world as a model, which led to meeting her husband, prolific artist Mel Ramos. While modeling for him, she earned a bachelor’s degree in education, and became an elementary school teacher.
The couple had three children, and in 1968, Mel took a teaching position in Oakland at California State University. There, Leta would go back to school, and earn a second degree in art. While all of these activities brought her incredible joy, Leta’s real passion came from working and volunteering with disabled artists. She was introduced to Oakland’s nonprofit organization, Creative Growth Art Center, where she brought her son, Brad, to attend its adult art program. Leta helped the school grow as she invited well-known artists to mentor and work side-by-side with the students. This was the most rewarding work of her life and is evident in her own mixed-media portrait series she created of the artists.
Throughout Leta’s life, she and Mel traveled extensively and spent 46 summers in Spain, where the family purchased and renovated an old house in the village of Horta de Sant Joan. Lolita "Leta" Alice Ramos was 85 when she died peacefully on March 5, 2020, in her Oakland home.
