1930s Art Deco Boxed Demitasse Set — Royal Doulton & Mappin & Webb (Gold Vermeil Spoons, Sheffield 1933)
An exceptional Art Deco presentation set, retailed by Mappin & Webb and dating to the early 1930s. Complete in its original satin-lined fitted case, this luxurious ensemble pairs six Royal Doulton octagonal demi-tasse cups and saucers in a dramatic red and gold geometric pattern with six gold-vermeil sterling silver spoons by Mappin & Webb.
The porcelain bears the Royal Doulton lion-and-crown backstamp (1928–1936) along with the hand-painted pattern number D4280, confirming its early 1930s production. The matching sterling spoons are hallmarked Sheffield 1933 (crown, lion passant, date letter “q”), with the maker’s mark M & W for Mappin & Webb, one of Britain’s most prestigious silversmiths and royal warrant holders. Each spoon is gilt-washed (vermeil), perfectly complementing the gilt porcelain.
✨ A Cherished Wedding Gift Tradition
During the interwar years, boxed tea and coffee sets like this were classic luxury wedding gifts. Fine china symbolized prosperity and hospitality, while sterling silver represented longevity and enduring value. Sets combining Royal Doulton porcelain and Mappin & Webb silver were retailed in fitted cases specifically for presentation gifting, often treasured for a lifetime and brought out on special occasions. Sotheby’s has sold closely related examples in alternative colorways (notably blue and gold), underscoring the collectibility of this design.
The fitted case, lined in white satin with a claret red exterior, completes the ensemble — making this not only functional but also a piece of design history from the glamorous Art Deco era.
