The magnificent Rococo palace is one of the most important architectural, cultural, and historic monuments in Austria.At the time of painting, the ruler would have been Franz Joseph I, head of the Austrian Empire.Figures in the composition provide a sense of scale and also bring a domesticity to what is otherwise an austerely grand interior.The work is inscribed in German and is most likely by an artist from that region. It is possibly the work of Bohemian artist Franz Heinrich (1802–1890), who painted a number of palace interiors in the mid-19th century in a similarly accomplished manner.
