No cabinetmaker of his time experimented as extensively with bent, laminated wood as Jean-Joseph Chapuis (1765-1864), who was then based in Brussels, France. with his design of a lightweight laminated chair, which he also used to furnish Laken Palace, he anticipated 20th-century modernism and created an icon of modern chair design. This exceptionally fine lyre table also features a laminated oval frame and is otherwise extremely finely crafted in both wood and brass. Beneath the hinged tabletop of the oval body is a storage unit with various compartments, including one with a roll-top closure, made of various stained woods. The piece bears multiple stamps.
