This is an extremely rare antique Parian porcelain sculpture of a sleeping baby angel (putto or cherub) made by the British company Copeland in 1860 (these details are all stamped on the back of the figure or the base/socle). It is titled "Asleep."
Parian porcelain was an innovation developed in theVictorian era and renowned for how it resembled marble, making sculptureaccessible to the affluent upper middle class.
The figure has a lovely peaceful vibe, which is something we all need in these times; if you have children, you can relate to its serene sleeping expression.
In excellent condition; no chips, cracks or restoration. Rare to find, especially in this condition after 160+ years. Impressed COPELAND on the back of the sculpture and, on the base, JS WESTMACOTT SC(ulptor) and PUB(lished) MARCH 1860. Height: 8 inches.
