Beautiful E. B. Mannings Antique Pewter Tin Coffee Pot from the Civil War Era (Patent June 1862) In good condition for age, with some dents (see pictures!), some interior rust in bottom and exterior of bottom. 9.5” tall, 7.5" across spout to handle.
History: E. B. Manning (Edward B. Manning) was an American inventor known for his improvements in the manufacture of Britannia metal (a type of pewter) tea and coffee pots, particularly during the Civil War era.
Edward B. Manning received a patent on June 3, 1862, for an "improved Britannia" tea and coffee pot. This patent addressed the issue of pewter melting at high temperatures by constructing the lower body and bottom of the pots from iron or another high-heat-resistant metal, while the upper body remained pewter. His invention made pewter vessels more practical for preparing and serving hot beverages, as traditional pewter had a low melting point. Antique pewter coffee pots and teapots marked with "E.B. Manning" or "E.B. Mannings Patent June 5 1862" are collectible items from the Civil War era. (Info courtesy of Google AI overview)
